Frequently Asked Questions - For Members: Coaching
-
Mental health coaching is a collaborative, goal-oriented process designed to help individuals navigate life’s challenges, develop resilience, and achieve personal growth. Unlike therapy, which delves into the diagnosis and treatment of mental health disorders, mental health coaching focuses on equipping clients with tools, strategies, and a proactive mindset to address everyday stressors and life transitions. The primary aim is to empower individuals to take charge of their emotional well-being, enhance their quality of life, and build the skills necessary to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.
Coaches work with clients to tackle a wide range of life situations, from managing anxiety and burnout to building healthier relationships and improving sleep. This partnership involves assessing the client’s current circumstances, identifying areas for improvement, and co-creating actionable plans for positive change. Coaches act as motivators, accountability partners, and resources, offering guidance and support while encouraging clients to unlock their full potential.
-
While both mental health coaches and therapists aim to support your mental well-being, they differ significantly in their approach, focus, and qualifications. Here’s how they compare:
Area of Focus:
• Mental Health Coaches: Coaches concentrate on your current situation and future goals, working collaboratively with you to create actionable steps toward achieving those objectives. They provide ongoing guidance and help adjust strategies to keep you on track as you progress.
• Therapists: Therapy, on the other hand, involves working with a licensed professional to address deep-rooted psychological symptoms or emotional patterns that may be holding you back. Sessions often delve into past and present challenges to facilitate healing and lasting positive change.
Credentials:
• Mental Health Coaches: Coaches complete certifications from recognized organizations, such as the National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching (NBHWC), or may hold a master’s-level degree in a psychology-related field. They focus on evidence-based coaching strategies rather than clinical treatment.
• Therapists: Therapists typically hold at least a master’s degree in psychology, counseling, or a related discipline. They must also complete state-specific licensing requirements, including supervised clinical practice hours. Advanced practitioners, such as psychologists, may have a PhD or PsyD in their field.
Diagnoses:
• Mental Health Coaches: Coaches are not qualified to diagnose mental health conditions. However, they can suggest seeking evaluation from a licensed therapist if needed. Coaches help co-create personalized plans to support your well-being but are not equipped to treat mental health disorders like Major Depressive Disorder or Generalized Anxiety Disorder.
• Therapists: Therapists are trained to diagnose and treat mental illnesses using evidence-based techniques such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), psychodynamic therapy, or other therapeutic modalities.
Medication:
• Mental Health Coaches: Coaches cannot prescribe medications. If they believe medication could benefit you, they may recommend consulting a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner for further evaluation.
• Therapists: While most therapists cannot prescribe medication (except certain providers like psychiatrists or psychiatric nurse practitioners), they can collaborate with prescribing professionals to ensure you receive comprehensive care.
Price: Mental health coaching sessions are typically cheaper than seeing a therapist. For example, a 1 hour session with a Skyler Health therapist is $135 where as a 1 hour session with a mental health coach is $85.
Summary:
Mental health coaching is a forward-focused, goal-oriented approach that helps you navigate present challenges and build a brighter future. Therapy, on the other hand, is a clinical practice aimed at addressing deeper psychological concerns and patterns to facilitate healing. Both serve valuable roles, depending on your needs and circumstances.
